DID JESUS CLAIM TO BE GOD

Did Jesus Claim to be God?

Clearly, from the earliest years of the church, Jesus was called Lord and regarded by most Christians as God. Yet his divinity was a doctrine that was subjected to great debate . So the question—and it is the question—is this: Did Jesus really claim to be God (the Creator), or was his divinity something invented or assumed by the New Testament authors? (See “Did Jesus Claim to be God?”)

Some scholars believe Jesus was such a powerful teacher and compelling personality that his disciples just assumed he was God. Or maybe they just wanted to think he was God. John Dominic Crossan and the Jesus Seminar (a fringe group skeptical of scholars with presuppositions against miracles) are among those who believe Jesus was deified in error.

Although books like The Da Vinci Code argue that Jesus’ divinity was a later doctrine of the church, evidence shows otherwise (See “Was there a Da Vinci Conspiracy?”). Most Christians who accept the gospels as reliable insist that Jesus did claim deity. And that belief can be traced all the way back to Jesus’ immediate followers.

But there are those who accept Jesus as a great teacher, but are unwilling to call him God. As a deist, Thomas Jefferson had no problem accepting Jesus’ teachings on morals and ethics while denying his deity.6 But as we’ve said, and will explore further, if Jesus was not who he claimed to be, then we must examine some other alternatives, none of which would make him a great moral teacher.

Even a superficial reading of the Gospels reveals that Jesus claimed to be someone more than a prophet like Moses or Daniel. But it is the nature of those claims that concern us. Two questions are worthy of attention.

  • Did Jesus actually claim to be God?
  • When he said “God,” did Jesus really mean he was the Creator of the universe spoken of in the Hebrew Bible?

To address these questions, let's consider Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:18: “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth.” What does it mean that Jesus has been “given” authority?

Prior to Jesus taking on human form, we are told that he eternally coexisted with his Father, and as God he had all authority. But Philippians 2:6-11 tells us that even though Jesus had existed in the form of God, he “stripped himself” of God’s powers to be born a human being. Yet the same passage tells us that after his resurrection Jesus was restored to his former glory, and someday “every knee will bow to him as Lord.”

So, what did Jesus mean when he claimed to have complete authority in heaven and on earth? Authority” was a well-understood term in Roman-occupied Israel. At that time, Caesar was the supreme authority in the entire Roman world. His edict could instantly launch legions for war, condemn or exonerate criminals, and establish laws and rules of government. In fact, Caesar’s authority was such that he himself claimed divinity.

So, at the very least Jesus was claiming authority on a par with Caesar himself. But He didn’t just say he had more authority than the Jewish leaders or Roman rulers; Jesus was claiming to be the supreme authority in the universe. To those he spoke to, it meant that he was God. Not a god—but the God. Both their words and actions testify to the fact that they truly believed Jesus is God. (See "Did the Apostles Believe Jesus is God?")

Great Religious Leader?

Great Religious Leader?

Did Jesus deserve the title of “great religious leader”? Surprisingly, Jesus never claimed to be a religious leader. He never got into religious politics or pushed an ambitious agenda, and he ministered almost entirely outside the established religious framework.









When one compares Jesus with the other great religious leaders, a remarkable distinction emerges. Ravi Zacharias, who grew up in a Hindu culture, has studied world religions and observed a fundamental distinction between other religious founders and Jesus Christ.

"Whatever we may make of their claims, one reality is inescapable. They are teachers who point to their teaching or show some particular way. In all of these, there emerges an instruction, a way of living. It is not Zoroaster to whom you turn; it is Zoroaster to whom you listen. It is not Buddha who delivers you; it is his Noble Truths that instruct you. It is not Mohammad who transforms you; it is the beauty of the Koran that woos you. By contrast, Jesus did not only teach or expound His message. He was identical with His message."4

The truth of Zacharias’s point is underscored by the number of times in the Gospels that Jesus’ teaching message was simply “Come to me” or “Follow me” or “Obey me.” Also, Jesus made it clear that his primary mission was to forgive sins, something only God could do.

No other major religious leader ever claimed the power to forgive sins. But that is not the only claim Jesus made that separated him from the others. In The World’s Great Religions, Huston Smith observed, “Only two people ever astounded their contemporaries so much that the question they evoked was not ‘Who is he?’ but ‘What is he?’ They were Jesus and Buddha. The answers these two gave were exactly the opposite. Buddha said unequivocally that he was a mere man, not a god—almost as if he foresaw later attempts to worship him. Jesus, on the other hand, claimed … to be divine.”5

Great Moral Teacher?

Great Moral Teacher?

Almost all scholars acknowledge that Jesus was a great moral teacher. In fact, his brilliant insight into human morality is an accomplishment recognized even by those of other religions. In his book Jesus of Nazareth, Jewish scholar Joseph Klausner wrote, “It is universally admitted … that Christ taught the purest and sublimest ethics … which throws the moral precepts and maxims of the wisest men of antiquity far into the shade.”1

Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount has been called the most superlative teaching of human ethics ever uttered by an individual. In fact, much of what we know today as “equal rights” actually is the result of Jesus’ teaching. Historian Will Durant said of Jesus that “he lived and struggled unremittingly for ‘equal rights’; in modern times he would have been sent to Siberia. ‘He that is greatest among you, let him be your servant’—this is the inversion of all political wisdom, of all sanity.”2

Some have tried to separate Jesus’ teaching on ethics from his claims about himself, believing that he was simply a great man who taught lofty moral principles. This was the approach of one of America’s Founding Fathers.

President Thomas Jefferson, ever the enlightened rationalist, sat down in the White House with two identical copies of the New Testament, a straight-edge razor, and a sheaf of octavo-size paper. Over the course of a few nights, he made quick work of cutting and pasting his own Bible, a slim volume he called “The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth.” After slicing away every passage that suggested Jesus’ divine nature, Jefferson had a Jesus who was no more and no less than a good, ethical guide.3

Ironically, Jefferson’s memorable words in the Declaration of Independence were rooted in Jesus’ teaching that each person is of immense and equal importance to God, regardless of sex, race, or social status. The famous document sets forth, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights …”

But the question Jefferson never addressed is: how could Jesus have been a great moral leader if he lied about being God? So perhaps he wasn’t really moral after all, but his motive was to begin a great religion. Let’s see if that explains Jesus’ greatness.

Is Jesus God?

Have you ever met somebody with such personal magnetism that he/she is always the center of attention? Possibly his/her personality or intelligence---but something about him/her is enigmatic. Well, that’s the way it was two thousand years ago with Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ greatness was obvious to all those who saw and heard him. But, whereas most great people simply fade into history books, Jesus of Nazareth is still the focus of numerous books and media controversy. And much of that controversy revolves around the radical claims Jesus made about himself.

As an unheralded carpenter from an obscure Galilean village in Israel, Jesus made claims that, if true, have profound implications on our lives. According to Jesus, you and I are special, part of a grand cosmic scheme, with him as the center of it all. This and other claims like it stunned everyone who heard them uttered.

It was primarily Jesus’ outrageous claims that caused him to be viewed as a crackpot by both the Roman authorities and the Jewish hierarchy. Although he was an outsider with no credentials or political powerbase, within three years, Jesus changed the world for the next 20 centuries. Other moral and religious leaders have left an impact---but nothing like that unknown carpenter from Nazareth.

What was it about Jesus Christ that made the difference? Was he merely a great man, or something more?

These questions get to the heart of who Jesus really was. Some believe he was merely a great moral teacher; others believe he was simply the leader of the world’s greatest religion. But many believe something far more. Christians believe that God has actually visited us in human form. And they believe the evidence backs that up. So who is the real Jesus? Let’s take a closer look.

As we take a deeper look at the world’s most controversial person, we begin by asking: could Jesus have been merely a great moral teacher?

FOLLOWING JESUS

Following Jesus

If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 1 Corinthians 15:19

Following Jesus is not always easy or comfortable. Often it means great cost and sacrifice, with no earthly rewards or security. Jesus didn't have a place to call home. You may find that following Christ costs you popularity, friendships, leisure time, or treasured habits. But while the cost of following Christ is high, the value of being Christ's disciple is even higher. Discipleship is an investment that lasts for eternity and yields incredible rewards.

Whether our concern is financial security, family approval, or something else, Jesus calls us over the tumult of our life's wild restlessness. He wants us to count the cost and set aside any difficulties we might have for following him. Jesus did not hesitate to demand complete loyalty because His grace is sufficient. Even family loyalty is not to take priority over the demands of Christ. His direct challenge forces us to ask ourselves about our own priorities in following him. The decision to follow Jesus should not be put off, even though other loyalties compete for our attention. Nothing should be placed above a total commitment. "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Philippians 1:21 (KJV)

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Matthew 16:24-27 (KJV)

Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? Why God Allows Suffering
and Tragedy



Severe suffering or tragedy often causes people to ask many questions and perhaps the most perplexing question of all is “Why did God allow this?” And while we won’t always be able to discern what reasons God has for any particular suffering or tragedy, the Bible has much to teach us on this subject.

First of all, the Bible tells us that God is ultimately in control of everything and that nothing happens that does not fit into His overall plan and purpose for this world:

“I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. ” (Isaiah 46:9-10).


Ephesians 1:12 tells us that God “works all things according to the counsel of His will”.


Psalms 115:3 says that “our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.”


In Isaiah 45:7, God says “I make peace and create calamity” and Amos 3:6 says “When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it?” In Deuteronomy 32:39, God says “I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: nor is there any who can deliver from My hand”. Acts 17:24-27 tells us that God “gives all men life and breath and everything else” and that “from one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.”


1 Samuel 2:7-8 says “The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap.”


In Exodus 4:11, God says to Moses, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?”


Dan 4:17 tells us that “the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men” and Proverbs 21:1 says “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes".

God is sovereign over everything: war and peace, disease and healing, blessings and disasters, kings and paupers, evil men and saints, tornadoes and gentle rains, stock market crashes and unexpected bonuses. This is important to see because we must understand that bad things do not happen apart from God’s control. God was not sitting in heaven chewing on His fingernails because He couldn’t do anything to prevent the 2004 tsunami that killed over 200,000 people.

He wasn’t sleeping or caught off-guard when the federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed nor when terrorists did their evil work on 9/1/1. He has always been and always will be in absolute control of everything.

But this does not mean that God likes everything that happens in and of itself. For example, He hates all sin and evil, and He Himself cannot even be tempted to sin nor does He ever tempt anyone else to sin (James 1:13).

And He will hold the sinner responsible for their sin. Nevertheless, He still allows people to do even the most horrible things because He has some good purpose for it in His eternal plan. A major part of His plan is to prepare a people for Himself who will love righteousness and hate sin and live in loving fellowship with Him both now and for all eternity. But accomplishing this requires some suffering and we’ll now examine some of the ways that God uses suffering.

One reason that God sends suffering is to discipline His people when they are going astray. The Bible tells us that just as human fathers lovingly discipline their children, so God disciplines all who belong to Him:

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by Him. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives” (Heb 12:5-6). In fact, the Bible goes even further by saying that if God does not discipline us then we are not truly His children (Heb 12:8). “God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” (Heb 12:10-11).


The Psalmist wrote “before I was afflicted, I went astray but now I keep Your word… it is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your word… in faithfulness You have afflicted me” (Ps 119:67,71,75). Sometimes our sin may not even be something that the world considers to be bad. It may be placing something or someone above God which is idolatry. But whatever the sin, God has many ways to discipline us such as sickness, famine, failure, disasters, the government, friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers, unjust treatment, etc.


In the Old Testament, God sometimes used even wicked nations to punish Israel when they rebelled against Him. Sometimes our suffering flows as a direct consequence of our own sin and at other times God may bring it indirectly. Sometimes it is a mixture. But if we are His children then regardless of how it comes, it is meant for our eternal good.

But sometimes God allows His children to suffer even when they are living faithfully to Him. Some suffering happens simply because we live in a fallen, sin-cursed world. Even the best of saints get sick, have flat tires, stub their toe, lose their wallet, have car wrecks, etc, and eventually die.

But all of these things are used of God to help build our character and draw us closer to Him. In fact, scripture tells us that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purposes” (Romans 8:28). And the verse that follows this one tells us that God has predestined His people to be conformed to the image of Jesus. So making us like Jesus is an important part of the “good” end to which God is working “all things” in our lives. We might not always be able to see how God will use something for our good, but He will.


The Bible also says that “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Tim 3:12). One reason for this is that the world hates the true God, Jesus, and Christians (John 15:18-25). So God’s people sometimes suffer precisely because they are trying to live godly lives which provokes hatred from Satan and from the world (John 15:18-25).

But such suffering provides an excellent opportunity for Christians to glorify Him by the way that they handle it. It is an opportunity to practice Jesus’ command to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. And because this can be so hard to do, it really requires us to look to God for the faith, courage, strength, and love with which to do it. The early believers even counted it an honor to suffer for the sake of Christ (Acts 5:41, Phil 1:29, Matt 5:10-12).


The apostle Paul wrote “we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom 5:3-5).


So suffering, whether deserved or not, is used by God to refine our character and build our faith and trust in Him. It should also draw us closer to God as we find our comfort in Him: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.” (2 Cor 1:3-5).


And thus we see that it also prepares us to help and comfort others who are suffering.

The Bible also shows us examples where God brought much good out of evil and suffering. In Genesis 37, Joseph’s jealous brothers betrayed him and sold him to some travelers who in turn sold him in Egypt to the Pharaoh’s captain of the guard. But rather than becoming bitter, Joseph faithfully served both God and his master and became his master’s most trusted servant.

But then his master’s wife falsely accused him because he wouldn’t give in to her evil seductions and as a result, his master put him in the dungeon where he remained for two years. There he faithfully served the keeper of the dungeon and God orchestrated events that raised him straight from the dungeon to second in command to Pharaoh and then God used him to save multitudes (including his brothers) from perishing during a great famine.


After he was finally reunited with his brothers, he told them that what they had meant for evil, God had meant for good (Gen 50:20), and that “it was not you who sent me here, but God” (Gen 45:8). In the book of Job, Satan told God that the righteous man Job was only serving Him for the material blessings that God was giving him and that if God would take away his blessings that Job would curse God to his face.

To prove Satan wrong, God gave Satan permission to mess with Job, and Satan used evil men, a strong wind, and fire to bring a series of disasters upon Job which killed all of his children and took away all of his flocks and herds in a single day. Job responded by worshiping God and saying, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1:21). Job accepted his hardships as from God, and God says that Job spoke rightly about Him (Job 1:22, 42:8).

Then Satan afflicted Job with painful boils from head to toe and Job’s friends lectured him at length because they believed he must have done some great evil to deserve so much suffering. But in the end, God revealed Himself to Job and his friends in a marvelous way and then rebuked his friends because they had spoken wrongly about God.

Job said to God, “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.” (Job 42:2). God eventually doubled Job’s previous possessions and gave him just as many more children as he had had before (and I believe his other children were safely awaiting him in heaven).

James writes “You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord — that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful” (James 5:11). So while Job suffered at the hands of Satan, bandits, the weather, and his accusing friends, God was ultimately behind it all and had a good purpose for it. Job got to experience God in a magnificent way and God was seen to be more valuable to Job than everything else he had. And perhaps the greatest benefit of suffering is that it helps us to find our joy in God Himself and not in His gifts.

Suffering and tragedy may also be sent by God as a warning to ungodly people. In such cases, though we may consider it to be judgment in one sense, it is also a mercy, an opportunity for them to realize where they are headed and repent before they are eternally condemned. Proverbs 29:1 warns us that “He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” So when a person or a nation persists in rebellion against God, God will eventually bring irrevocable judgment. Sometimes this judgment is clearly and dramatically seen as suffering or tragedy in this life but at other times God just allows people to continue carelessly on their way until they die and meet Him at the final judgment.

The scriptures give us many instances where God brought devastating judgment into the lives of individuals and nations that would not repent. In Luke 13, some people told Jesus about some men whom the Roman governor had slaughtered. Now, being God as well as man, no one has ever been as loving as Jesus. He was one who wept with those who wept. And had these people been grieving over this incident, He probably would have wept with them.

But from His response, it seems more likely that they were handling it like some bit of juicy news, perhaps even speculating what great sins the victims may have been guilty of to bring such tragedy upon themselves. And because of His great love, Jesus always said whatever needed to be said for the good of those listening. He never played to the crowds or avoided the truth for fear of losing His popularity. People’s eternal souls are far too valuable for that.

So Jesus responded “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?

No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:2-5). His reply warns us of a very dangerous attitude which we so easily fall prey to and that is judging others to be worthy of God’s wrath while assuming that we deserve better. The truth is that we are all sinners in the sight of God and worthy of His judgment. We were created to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind and to love others as ourselves (Matt 22:37-40).

God is perfectly holy, righteous, just, loving, merciful, gracious, and kind and He gives us all “life, breath, and all things”. So He is infinitely worthy of our complete love and devotion. We should not only place Him and His purposes above ourselves and our purposes but we ought to make it our purpose to fulfill His purpose for us. To do less is a great evil and because God is perfectly righteous and just, He cannot ignore our sin. Just as a human judge would be unjust if he were to let criminals go unpunished, so God would be unjust if He let our sins go unpunished. That puts us in a very bad spot. But it’s worse yet. Not only have we all committed many sins but we all have a sinful, selfish nature which continues to add more sins to our account. How can we ever hope to be accepted by this holy, righteous, and just God?

The good news is that God has provided a solution. But this solution actually involved the most unjust suffering that has ever happened. About two thousand years ago at the time and place prophesied, God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to earth as a baby born to a virgin named Mary.

He was fully God and fully man. He lived a perfect, sinless life. He loved the people, taught them about God, and performed many miracles. But many of the religious leaders hated Him because of jealousy and because He condemned their hypocritical religiosity which was devoid of true love for God and others.

These religious leaders persecuted Him and wanted to destroy Him. Then one of His own followers named Judas betrayed Him into their hands. They then turned Him over to the Roman governor, falsely accusing Him of treason. Then the people turned against Him and called for His execution. The governor knew He was innocent but he was afraid of the people so he ordered Jesus to be beaten severely, and then when the people were still unsatisfied, he ordered him to be crucified which is perhaps the cruelest and most painful method of execution ever invented.

This was the most unjust suffering that has ever occurred. But the scripture tells us that God planned for this to happen even before He created the world (1 Peter 1:20). Judas, the religious leaders, the Roman governor, and the people all freely chose to reject Jesus because of their own wicked hearts but in so doing they brought to pass that which God had planned all along (Acts 1:16, Acts 2:23, Matt 18:7).

And three days later, Jesus rose from the dead just as He had prophesied and then He came and went among His followers for forty more days before finally ascending up to heaven (Mark 10:33-34, Acts 1:3-11, 1 Cor 15:3-6). Why did He have to die? To a people who were suffering, the apostle Peter wrote “Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).


By His suffering and death on the cross, Jesus paid for the sins of all who would trust in Him as their Savior and Lord, including those responsible for His death. “ For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life “ (John 3:16). God can freely forgive our sins and still be righteous and just (Rom 3:21-26). So the most wicked betrayal and wrongful execution in all of history is being used by God to bring about the eternal salvation of all of His people.

But that is only part of the good news. By His Spirit, God is also able to change our hearts and set us free from the power of sin in our lives (Ezek 36:25-27). God Himself comes to live within those who trust in Jesus and submit themselves to Him (Acts 2:38, Phil 2:13). He gives us a heart to know Him, to love Him, and to love others. This does not mean that we instantly become sinless but it does mean that He will begin the process of making us like Jesus.

We will still struggle every day to do what is right and to avoid what is wrong but we will have God working within us to strengthen, empower, and lead us (Gal 5:16-23). When we fall, He will help us get back up and get going again. When we need discipline, He will provide it. As we seek Him in prayer and in His word, He will help us to know Him better and to understand and obey the Bible which is His word to us. All of this is available to us only through Jesus. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me” (John 14:6).

He also said “whoever comes to Me, I will never cast out” (John 6:37). If you have never done so, then God commands you to repent (turn away from your sin and rebellion and humbly submit yourself to Him) and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:31, 17:30-31). He issues a warning, saying “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts” (Heb 4:7). No matter what you have done and how wicked you are, God is able to save you (1 Tim 1:15-17).

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 6;23). If you refuse to repent and trust in Jesus Christ then all of the sufferings of Jesus and all of your own sufferings in this life will do you no good and you will suffer even worse for all eternity in hell. But if you receive Jesus, then all the benefits of His sufferings will be yours and He will use all of your sufferings in this life for your eternal benefit as well.

God's Good News

The God of heaven has made all things through his word and by his power he has blessed us all with life and breath and everything. [God gave us life as a spirit with a body (Genesis 2:7).] God gave us life so that we could have a loving relationship with him and others. However, ever since the beginning of the world, all men have turned away from God (Romans 3:12) because we have all broken God's righteous laws, which is sin (Romans 3:23, 1 John 3:4, 1 John 1:8). [If we have ever committed a sin (eg, lying, stealing, coveting another's possessions, etc.) in our lives then we are not innocent but we are guilty of breaking God's laws.] God gave us the responsibility of ruling over his world (Genesis 1:26) but due to our sinful nature, we flooded the Earth with sin and we failed to live according to God's perfect standard. [We are all tainted with a sinful nature, however, our sinful nature does not give us the right to commit a sin.]

Since God is perfect, his perfect justice demands punishment as the payment for all sin (Job 10:14). [Justice is the law of punishing wrongdoing and protecting the innocent. God will not simply let every sin go unpunished because God is a perfect judge and God has even higher standards than a human judge. God demands justice to prove that all sin is wrong and to prove his divine hatred for sin.] Due to God's love and temperance, he has been holding back the due punishment of wrath for our sins even though his hatred for every sin is eternal (Nahum 1:3, Joel 2:13). [God hates all sin because God is good and sin is evil. Every single sin is a serious offense to God because every time we commit a sin we are insulting God's laws (Leviticus 26:15-39).] We are all guilty of sin and since God is perfect and just, he can not deny his justice in the judgment of any sin (Job 8:3-4, Job 34:12). [Even all our good deeds can not take away the fact that we are guilty of committing sin (Isaiah 64:6) and God demands punishment for all sin because God is a perfect judge. God will not simply forgive every sinner without demanding punishment because God is too righteous to neglect bringing justice against any sin and God's mercy can not cancel out his justice.] Therefore, since God is a righteous judge and since he can not let any sin go unpunished, how can we possibly escape penalization from God's judgment (Job 25:4-6)? Due to God's love and wisdom, he devised a perfect plan to save us (Titus 2:11). [Instead of destroying mankind immediately after we sinned, God was compassionate enough to make a plan for us to be saved from our sins. God made a plan that would demonstrate both his perfect justice and his perfect mercy through Jesus' death and resurrection.]

Jesus the Christ became a man (John 1:14, Philippians 2:6-8) and God sent him into the world to freely lay down his sinless life as the perfect sacrifice to pay the fine for our sins and the sins of the whole world so that we might be saved through him (1 John 2:2, John 14:6, John 3:16-17, John 10:15,17-18, 1 John 3:5, Matthew 1.21, Acts 10:43). [Jesus is named the "Christ" which means "Anointed One" because God was pleased with him enough to anoint him with his Holy Spirit and with all power over creation (Colossians 1:19-20, Acts 10:38, Colossians 1:15-20, Matthew 28:18). Jesus is the visible representation of the invisible God because the fullness of God is connected to him (Colossians 1:15-19, Hebrews 1:3). Jesus Christ was with God in the beginning (John 1:1-2) and he was sent into the world in the form of a man but he did not inherit the sinful nature of men because he was revealed by the power of God's Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35).] The life of a man is in the blood (Leviticus 17:14) and Jesus' blood was shed when he died for us on a cross so that his perfectly righteous life might replace our sinful lives (Romans 3:25). And, through Jesus Christ, God has made the bridge for us to cross over from death to eternal life (John 5:24). [The consequence of sin is death but the gift of God through Jesus Christ is eternal life (Romans 6:23).] Jesus' body became sin (2 Corinthians 5:21) and Jesus kindly accepted God's wrath for sin on the cross by suffering death in his body (Isaiah 53:4-6). [Jesus' body on the cross was the representation of sin and the shamefulness of sin. Jesus showed the perfect humility by accepting crucifixion so that we might be saved through his sacrifice and the reason why Jesus did this for us was because he loved us more than his own honor (Philippians 2:6-11, Ephesians 3:18-19).] Therefore, God's wrath for sin was paid in full through the death of Jesus' body so that we might be justified in God's presence (Romans 3:25-26, Romans 8:3). [God is so holy and so righteous that we can not even stand in his heavenly presence unless our sins are taken away and Jesus sacrificed his body so that our sins of the past, present, and future might be put to death through his body (John 1:29, Hebrews 9:28).]

God is righteousness and he hates unrighteousness therefore he wants us to become righteous like him through the perfect righteousness of God's Son, Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). [The term "Son of God" is a metaphor used of Jesus Christ to emphasize his close, spiritual relationship with God and to acknowledge the fact that he came from God (John 8:42, John 17:8).] And, since Jesus humbly died for us, God raised him from the dead on the third day (Acts 10:38-40, Luke 24:45-46), giving proof to all men that Jesus was sent to save us (1 John 4:14, 1 Timothy 1:15), and now he sits at the right hand of God (Hebrews 1:3, Mark 16:19). [Even though Jesus' body died, his Spirit lived. And, God rewarded Jesus' sinless life and his sacrifice by giving Jesus the power to rise from the dead to a new life in a glorified body. After Jesus' resurrection, he ascended to the right hand of God in heaven.] Also, since sin and death were defeated through Jesus' death and resurrection, God has given him authority to judge the world (Acts 10:41-43, 2 Timothy 4:1, Matthew 28:18). And, God has appointed a day when Jesus will come to the world to resurrect the dead and judge our lives according to every deed (Acts 17:31, 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Peter 4:5). [At the resurrection, everyone who is connected to Jesus Christ will rise to a sinless, new life in a glorified body and they will receive the reward for their good deeds (Daniel 12:2-3, Luke 14:14). But, everyone who remains connected to sin will rise to receive the punishment of God's wrath and anger (Daniel 12:2, Romans 2:8, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-10).] Due to God's love and generosity, he will grant us eternal life in the kingdom of God if we choose to repent of our sins and believe the good news of Jesus Christ that he has declared (Mark 1:15, Acts 20:21, Romans 6:23). [Repentance is the act of offering God the spiritual sacrifice of a contrite heart towards our sins which causes us to turn away from sin (Psalms 51:17, Isaiah 57:15, Ezekiel 18:31-32). Faith in the good news of Jesus Christ is the illustration of our acceptance of Jesus' life into our hearts.]

Sin proves our unfaithfulness to God but Jesus' sacrifice and victory over death proves God's love and faithfulness to us (2 Timothy 2:13, 1 Corinthians 1:9). By nature, we are all sinful and because of our sins God is very grieved and angry. But, due to God's love and mercy, he promises to forgive all our sins if we repent (1John 1:9, Isaiah 55:7, Psalm 130:1-4) and believe his good news in our hearts. This is his good news: God's Son, Jesus Christ, who had a sinless nature, laid down his life on the cross as the sacrifice for sin and God raised him to life so that we might have life through him (John 10:10, 1 John 4:9, John 20:31, John 14:6). Due to God's love and patience, he is waiting so that we all might accept his plan of salvation before the day that Jesus comes to bring perfect justice to the world (2 Peter 3:9, 1 Timothy 2:3-4, Romans 2:4). [God commands us to be humble enough to repent of our sins (Acts 17:30, Luke 18:9-14) and put our faith in the good news of Jesus Christ because this is the only requirement for salvation (Romans 10:9-13, John 6:28-29).] And, only the sacrifice of Jesus Christ can take away our sins (John 1:29, 1 John 2:2) so that, on the Day of Judgment, we can have freedom from the wrath of God (John 3:36, Romans 8:1). [Jesus offered us his sinless life and he defeated death by rising from the dead so that we might rise to a sinless, new life just as he rose to a new life, and therefore if we have Jesus' innocent life then we will be acquitted of all accusations on the Day of Judgment.] If we repent and trust in Jesus Christ then God will bless us with a new nature and a new life so that we can have a friendly relationship with God (2 Corinthians 5:17). [Spiritually, God will bless us with a new nature and a new life when we come to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. And physically, this will happen to those who belong to Jesus when Jesus comes to the world.]

While we were sinning and doing everything contrary to God, he still gave proof of his love and compassion to us through Jesus Christ (Romans 5:6-8). [Sin is everything contrary to the righteous nature of God because sin is unrighteousness and every single sin is a sign of disobedience, rebellion, and lawlessness.] The living God testifies that the whole world is imperfect but he is perfect and since he is perfect, his love is also perfect. This is how God has shown us the glory of his love: God sent his greatest possession (his only Son) to become a sacrifice in order to offer us the greatest favor (eternal life) even while we were unrighteous and unfaithful to God (John 3:16-17, 1 John 4:9-10). [We did not deserve to have Jesus Christ come down from heaven as a man to lay down his life for us because we have sinned and broken God's laws and we have done the very things that God hates, but despite our sins, God still offers eternal life to us through Jesus Christ to prove that he is good and to prove his divine love for us.] By this act of grace, God has revealed his perfect nature by showing us the highest degree of love. This love is much greater than all the things of this world including all the riches, pleasures, and traditions because the things of this world will not last forever but the grace that God offers us through Jesus Christ is an eternal gift (Romans 6:23, 1 John 2:16-17, Mark 8:36-37). And, if this act was never done then we could never realize the full extent of God's love.

Due to God's love and impartiality, he proclaims his eternal good news to all creation (Mark 16:15, Acts 10:34-35). And, God's good news is not a matter of opinion but it is the truth that God testified to (John 5:31-37, John 18:37) so that we might have peace with him through the mediator, Jesus Christ, who offered us his life to pay the fine for our sins (1 Timothy 2:5-6, Romans 5:1, 1 Peter 3:18). [Sin separated us from God and sin made us enemies of God but even while we were still sinners, God loved us enough to send Jesus Christ into the world to provide relief from our sin debt and to restore peace to our relationship with God so that if we live with Jesus Christ, we can be worthy to stand before God and live forever in God's kingdom.] Jesus has given us his testimony, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever walks in me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). God has given us the evidence of Jesus' resurrection and the evidence of perfect love. That is how we can have confidence that this testimony is the truth that came from God who is perfect. But, if any testimony conflicts with this testimony of God's perfect love then it is a imperfect testimony because it does not accept God's perfect nature therefore it can only come from the imperfect mind of a sinner.

We were born without any knowledge and when we became older we gained some knowledge but if we understand the love of God, then we have reached the pinnacle of knowledge (Ephesians 3:19). We have all turned away from God who gave us everything but God has given his good news to the world so that we might appreciate his compassionate love and turn back to him for salvation. And, the only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12, John 14:6) and in him our souls can rest (Matthew 11:28). [The only way for us to be saved from our sins is through Jesus Christ and his payment, because no other sinless man offered us his life but Jesus Christ is the only sinless man and he is the only one who died for us and rose from the dead so that if we hold on to his life, we can be saved.]

Through repentance and faith in God's Son and heir, Jesus Christ, God gives us spiritual birth so that we can become God's children (John 1:12) and heirs (Romans 8:17). [Through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, God's Holy Spirit will live with our spirits and renew our spirits so that our spirits will be born again (John 3:1-8, Ephesians 1:13-14, Galatians 3:14, Acts 15:7-9). The Holy Spirit is connected to all the followers of Jesus Christ and his power guides them into all truth (John 16:13-15, 1 Corinthians 2:12-13) and he gives them the power to rise to a new life (Romans 8:11).] And, if we become God's children and heirs then we will have the hope of inheriting eternal glory and prosperity in the kingdom of God (Romans 8:17, 2 Corinthians 8:9). The God of heaven truly wants to have a loving relationship with us through Jesus Christ and he is willing to make our joy complete with his unfailing love. If you want eternal life, if you want the inheritance of God's kingdom, and if you want to be part of God's family then call upon God from your heart for forgiveness of sins and confess your acceptance of Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9, Psalms 145:18). You can pray this prayer:

Dear God, I'm guilty of sin, have mercy on me, forgive me for all my sins. I believe Jesus died for me and rose from the dead and today I accept Jesus as the Lord of my life. Help me to turn away from my sins and help me to follow Jesus. I want to be with you forever, fill me with your Holy Spirit. Thank you for being so good and thank you for giving me the promise of salvation. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Which religion should I choose to believe in?

Firstly why should I believe in any religion at all?
The spirit realm may only be a figment of my imagination.
What proof is there of the supernatural?

Secular evidence for the existence of supernatural reality.

5. Definitions

1. Observation.

Observation is the action or process of closely observing or monitoring. When I observe an object or an event with one or more of my five senses, I perceive that this object or event is real. My record of this observation enables me to know that such an object or event existed in the past. This constitutes the first level of veracity.

Records of another person having observed details of an object or event which existed in the past constitute the second level of veracity. I can choose to believe or not to believe them.

If these records show internal consistency and external consistency, I will tend to consider them as reliable. Internal consistency is the lack of contradictory statements in the record. External consistency is the presence of descriptions which correspond with the times, names, places and events around about the time when the object existed or event occurred.

The degree to which I can consider such records as reliable is the degree I believe that such an object or event is real.

2. Chance and probability

Chance is the occurrence of events in the absence of any obvious design or cause.
Probability is the extent to which something is likely to happen or to be the case.

How do I estimate the probability of an event occurring at any point in time? This depends on the past history of occurrence of that event.

Take for instance, the rising of the sun within the next 24 hours. The probability is almost one in one. Why not one in one? This is because there is a very remote chance that an astronomic cataclysm may occur to our solar system. I maintain this opinion because I extrapolate from the observation that such events have been observed in other solar systems.

I know that the rising of the sun every 24 hours is the result of the rotation of the earth about its own axis. My question is how this rotation came about in the first place. Was it by chance or by design?

Scissors are used for cutting cloth and paper, consisting of two crossing blades pivoted in the middle and operated by thumb and fingers inserted in rings at each end. Scissors are not found in nature. They are the product of man.

If I have an attitude that I am not interested in the origin of scissors, the matter stops here. If, on the other hand, I have an attitude that I am interested in the origin of scissors, my next question is how did the first scissors come about?

I do not know the answer. I can only guess that some occurrence in nature gave the idea to a person who used it to modify two knives to act as the two blades of the scissors.

I can guess that the occurrence in nature happened by chance. I can also guess that the idea came to the inventor by chance.

By this form of reasoning, I can attribute the origin of the scissors to chance. By this form of reasoning, I can attribute the origin of any and every contrived object or process to chance.

As far as natural objects are concerned, I can also hold the opinion that all are the product of chance operating on previous objects.

Objects are made of matter. How did matter come about?

I choose to look at phenomena and see what they indicate.

3. Phenomenon

Phenomenon is a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause is in question. I would like to discuss two phenomena.

The existence of matter is a phenomenon. If I am of the opinion that matter existed from the infinite past, then I may find it pointless to continue this discussion.

However, is this opinion supported by evidence? I prefer to commence my inquiry from the starting point of reality. I could look at evidence from astronomy and physics.

Observational cosmology including findings from the Hubble telescope provided evidence for the expanding universe as arising from a point source some 12 to 14 billion years ago.

The ambient temperature of outer space is three degrees Kelvin, consistent with a big bang origin of the universe.

Moreover, the half-life decay of radioactive elements indicate the origin to be 12.5 to 14.5 billion years ago.

Thus it appears that scientific evidence supports the opinion that the universe started from a finite point (singularity) between 12 and 14 billion years ago. This is described as the Big Bang. Hence the opinion that matter existed from the infinite past is not supported by observed reality.

The next logical question would be what was it like before the big bang? I do not know the answer.

One possible answer is that there was nothing. But how can something as large and as massive as the universe arise from nothing?

Permit me to drop this discussion thread for the moment. I will come back to it later.

The next phenomenon is something completely different.

Some temple mediums have given uncannily accurate confidential private and personal details of the departed. Some have even spoken in the voice and accent of the departed.

One explanation is that this phenomenon has occurred by chance. However, the consistency of this ability in some temple mediums indicate that the likelihood of chance is extremely remote.

There are cases of children being able to recall events experienced by deceased individuals when they were alive. (Ian Stevenson)

The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes; Deuteronomy 1:30 (KJV)
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Joshua 1:5 (KJV)
God's promises had guaranteed that Israel would be delivered from bondage in Egypt. Here, God promises to fight for His people, assuring them of victory in battle as they entered the Promised Land.
There would be many battles as God's people went into the land. Ungodly nations would persistently oppose them. Moses, as God's spokesperson, expresses the Lord's commitment to do battle for Israel. "The LORD your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you." The Lord had done mighty things for Israel in bringing them out of Egypt. Now, Moses assures them that God will act again on their behalf "according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes."
Later, the Lord Himself reassured Joshua of similar truth. "No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life." Many would try to come against the people of God under Joshua's leadership. Yet, God pledged the same faithfulness to Joshua that Moses had enjoyed. "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you." Then, the Lord added the ultimate words of reassurance. "I will not leave you nor forsake you." When facing the certainty of battles, there is nothing greater than having God committed to always be present to fight against the enemy. The battle report in one region of the Promised Land gave testimony to God's faithful promises. "All these kings and their land Joshua took at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel" (Joshua 10:42).
We are also engaged in warfare, spiritual warfare. "You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" (2 Timothy 2:3). As spiritual soldiers, we must use spiritual weapons. "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds" (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). The promises of God are part of our spiritual weaponry. Paul stood victorious in battle by the promises of God. "Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you - And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them" (Acts 18:9-11).
Dear Lord, the battles rage hot and heavy so often in my life. I thank You for Your promises to fight for me. I rest in Your presence in my life here in the midst of this battlefield called earth, Amen.

My Story

A year ago I was an account manager for a (drum roll) a pipe manufacturing company. Not exactly what I dreamed of when I was growing up. The job I had before that, I used to work in at a mortgage company. That job I did like. Initially I was one of the processors and then started working in the sales department. That was really exciting 5-6 years ago. I was trying to learn the ropes as a salesperson and then eventually I really did start to make some money. I was doing well 3-4 years ago. Then as you know the mortgage industry just took a huge down turn. Along with every other industry and jobs available.

So, I took an extremely low paying job as an account manager at a pipe manufacturing company. This time I did have a slight base pay at the company. I was sSelling something that I was not particularly excited about and made a small commission. My wife eventually lost her job so we had to move from our small apartment to an even smaller apartment.

Credit cards started to max out. Pulling even more cash out of other cards just to make another credit card’s minimum payment. We initially owed around $12,000 which was not too good to start with. However, even though we had made our minimum monthly payment every month with all the interest fees and late payments our balance never went down. Within the year and a half we went from being in a little debt to an extreme amount of $33,500 in debt. Our monthly payment exceeded $800 a month and the balance was not going down at all. We did not know what to do. Our rent alone was $1200 a month, meanwhile our credit card bill was over $800. And out of the $800 minimum payment that we were making, most of it was going to all the interest and fees. We never got to go out for dinner or do anything fun anymore.

How I got my life turned around

I’ve always seen internet offers all the time talking about some great business opportunity. I always wondered if any of that stuff really worked. Things that are supposed to make you millions of dollars instantly.     I want to add my testimonial on this blog. Here you go Kevin. I was wary about working from home, because I’d heard horror stories about the Internet. But I’d heard that there were rounds of layoffs coming at my company, so I figured I should do something to try and have a backup should the worst happen. I was amazed when I got your online course.
